Mizzou Softball Dynamic |

At The University of Missouri we use the Dynamic Warm-up for Softball to address multiple training variables due to time constraints. Typically, fall off-season workouts are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday and must be completed within a 1.5 hour block, this is for weights and all conditioning activities. Obviously, the main objective of the warm-up is to elevate the body temperature and prepare the muscles and connective tissues for the work ahead but, we also view it as a time to work on the following:
The
list below is an example of movements used during a warm-up. The coach
will choose 8-12 movements each workout from the list. So, no warm-up will
be the same. The athlete will first perform the dynamic drill and then the
stationary drill will be executed. We use a distance of 20 yds. for all
dynamic movements. As the athletes progress, we will eventually a
designated leader to run the warm-up, thus assisting to build leadership
and promoting ownership. Additionally the warm-up does not become stale
and the helps maintain motivation. The greatest advantage that has come of this is the increased ability of the athletes to learn new movements. As more and more movements are added their capacity to learn increases and the time needed to acclimate to new movements decreases.
In January 2006 MU alumnus Derrick Ming was named as Strength and Conditioning Assistant for the University of Missouri. In his role he is directly responsible for working with the softball team as well as assisting with Missouri’s remaining varsity sports. “I got into coaching because I really care about the athlete’s future. As a former player, there were a lot of things I did not like and tried to change. What better way to make a difference (than to coach).” Ming lettered as a linebacker at Missouri from 2002-05. In 2005, Ming was voted one of five captains by his teammates. During his senior campaign, Ming helped lead the Tigers to its second bowl game in three years; where the Tigers had on of the greatest comebacks in Missouri history, beating South Carolina 38-31. Ming received his undergraduate degree in 2005 in General Agriculture with an emphasis in Ag Journalism, Hotel and Restaurant Management, and Rural Sociology; and also received a Minor in Ag Economics. Ming is now working on his Master’s in Health Education.
