On Saturday, January 26th there was a fantastic seminar at Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning in Winchester, MA.  Mike Boyle, Bob Hanson and the entire staff must be commended for all their hard work in making the seminar a success.

This was the second annual winter seminar and the great feedback from last years event led to an even bigger crowd this year as the room was jam packed and excited to listen to the great line-up of speakers.

The day started off with Brijesh Patel and his presentation: Mobility, Stability and Work Capacity: The Foundation of Health and Fitness.  This presentation was about what Coach Patel has seen over the years amongst his newcomers in the collegiate setting.  He has noticed that the athletes that are entering his program now are deficient in some areas (mobility, stability, work capacity) and how his programming has changed to address these issues.  Further advanced levels of training can not be used until the basics are in place.  Coach Patel showed a number of exercises he has had success and broke them down with a joint by joint approach throughout the body.

The next presenter of the day was Anthony Slater from Athletes Performance.  Anthony's presentation was entitled: Movement Training Using Keiser Cable Systems.  This presentation was a great review of physics and how important rotary training is to athletic performance enhancement.  If you've never used the Keiser Functional Trainer, you are missing out on a extraordinary piece of equipment.  The resistance comes from air versus a weight stack and allows the user to accelerate the load through a full range of motion without having to worry about decelerating a load near the end range.  Anthony showed a number of exercises and variations that can be performed not only with the Keiser, but regular cable columns and even medicine balls.

Physical therapist, John Pallof was next on deck with his presentation entitled: Healthy Lumbar Spines.  John is an excellent therapist that goes under the radar.  He has very extensive training in manual therapy and is also in the trenches training athletes.  He has a very good understanding of not only rehabbing an athlete but also how to bring them back to their pre-injury condition.  John talked about common back injuries and how to fix your training to address these situations that you may find in your athletes.  He had a number of considerations that can help anybody with their athletes and clients with back pain right away.

The fourth presenter of the day was the host himself, Michael Boyle.  If you've never had the opportunity to hear Coach Boyle speak, you are missing out on a presentation that will leave you laughing, thinking, and wanting more.  Coach Boyle has the innate ability to attract the audience and talk to them like he's having a normal conversation with them.  Coach Boyle's presentation was entitled: Training the Endurance Athlete.  The presentation shared some insights into endurance athletes and their common injury patterns and how we as trainers can help them and implement changes into their programming to put them on the right path.

The last speaker of the day was strength coach Eric Cressey.  Eric's presentation was entitled: The Versatile Strength Coach: How to get a training effect in spite of injuries.  Eric's current clientele consists primarily of baseball athletes and his presentation showed common injuries and how we as trainers can still train around them to receive training benefits.  Eric started with the shoulder and common issues with both internal and external impingement issues.  Eric proceeded to give excellent tips on how to address these situations and still continue to train rather than missing training time.  Eric then moved onto the lower back; specifically Spondylolysis.  This issue seems to becoming extremely common and is becoming an epidemic.  Eric went on to talk about risk factors and how we can try to reduce the chance of these injuries.

All in all, The second annual winter seminar at Mike Boyle's was another success and if you weren't able to make it out this time you are in luck.  The presenters all agreed to put their PowerPoint's presentation with their videos over laced with their actual audio on a single DVD for sale.  Be on the lookout for this unbelievable product that will be sure to entertain, enlighten and educate you.
